Living on the road, not owning a house…or inhabiting a house at all for that matter, is a direct violation of society’s expectations. This lifestyle goes directly against the grain of how most people live and has revealed to me the weight of what we’ve been led to believe is important. We’ve been led to believe we should always ALWAYS be striving for more. More money, more stuff. Life is a constant, never-ending pursuit of a newer, bigger house, new cars, promotions, vacations, season tickets, a fancy wardrobe, the latest technology…and on and on and on. But when is it ever ENOUGH? Where is the finish line? The pat on the back and the “you’ve made it” certificate. There is no such thing. We fight like hell for more, and all we’re ever left with is wanting even MORE. It’s an exhausting, never-ending pursuit of……. Of what?
I’ve thrown society’s expectations out the window and am pursuing a life of my own design. Living minimally and traveling often. What’s shocked me most three months in to this adventure is that I still feel this need to be chasing more. Those voices in my head louder than ever, saying you’re doing it all wrong, you can’t live like that. I can’t shake it and it’s maddening. Until yesterday when I came across the following lyrics by Jack Johnson:
“We’ve got everything we need right here and everything we need is enough.”
That word ENOUGH…hit me in the face like a lead balloon. MY. LIFE. IS. ENOUGH. I have an incredible husband. A comfortable home (that even has wheels). A business that pays the bills. Family. Friends. Food. Water. Freedom. What more could I possibly want. And more importantly, WHY?
At what point do we stop chasing and start enjoying everything we’ve been working for? There is no finish line. Your life will never be ENOUGH if you don’t stop and decide that it is.
In the words of Danielle LaPorte…
“Pull over to the side of your journey and look how far you’ve come”.
Take a break. A breath. Decide for yourself if MORE is something you truly want or if it’s what you THINK you need. Turn down the voices of all those that don’t have to walk in your shoes and choose your own path.
Society will never applaud you for your pursuit of more. Only you can decide when to stop stressing and when to start enjoying the life you’ve made for yourself.
